Cold Rolled Steel Sheet Grades: SPCC, DC01, ST12 and ST13 — Differences and Selection
Buyers who only specify "cold rolled steel sheet" often end up with a grade that does not match the forming operation on the shop floor. Cold rolled sheet is supplied under several designation systems, and although SPCC, DC01, ST12, and ST13 refer to broadly similar drawing-quality material, the differences in chemical limits, mechanical properties, and testing requirements do affect the final product. Picking the right grade at the order stage avoids cracking on the draw die, surface stretcher strain on lightly formed panels, and the dimensional surprise of a coil that is out of gauge after temper rolling.
What cold rolled sheet actually is
Cold rolled sheet starts as hot rolled pickled coil, then moves through a cold reduction mill that compresses the thickness and refines the surface. The result is a tighter thickness tolerance, a smoother finish, and a higher strength-to-ductility balance than the hot rolled starting stock. After rolling, the strip is annealed to restore ductility and then temper rolled to set the surface and mechanical properties. The amount of reduction in the cold mill and the type of anneal (batch or continuous) determine whether the final coil is suitable for drawing, deep drawing, or only simple forming.
Cold rolled sheet under the cold rolled steel product family is typically supplied in thicknesses from about 0.3 mm up to 3 mm. Widths of 1000 mm, 1250 mm, and 1500 mm are common, with mill edge or cut edge available depending on the slitting equipment. For lightly exposed structural and general fabrication work, ASTM A653 cold rolled structural steel coils provide a familiar North American reference with well-documented minimum yield and elongation values.
Reading the SPCC, DC01, ST12, ST13 labels
SPCC is the JIS G3141 designation and is essentially the baseline cold rolled sheet grade. It is appropriate for flat parts, brackets, panels that will be painted or plated after forming, and applications where some latitude on mechanical properties is acceptable. SPCC has no formal minimum elongation guarantee and is therefore usually paired with the additional SPCD drawing-quality or SPCE deep-drawing-quality suffix when a buyer needs formability data for a critical part.
DC01 follows EN 10130. It is broadly comparable to SPCC but with a defined set of mechanical properties and a maximum 0.12 percent carbon limit. DC01 cold rolled steel sheet is widely used across European-sourced components and is the default specification for general pressing and bending work. When deeper draws are required, the designer steps up to DC03 or DC04, which carry progressively higher elongation values.
The Chinese GB/T 5213 standard covers ST12, ST13, and ST14. ST12 cold rolled steel sheet is the general-purpose grade, equivalent to SPCC and DC01 in feel and behavior. ST13 adds formability and is used for slightly more demanding draws. When even better ductility is needed, ST14 with its lower yield and higher elongation handles the deepest draws used in automotive and appliance panels.
To put it briefly: SPCC and ST12 are the everyday workhorses, DC01 is the preferred reference in European supply chains, and the deeper-drawing grades (SPCD, DC03, ST13, DC04, ST14) are stepped in only when forming severity requires them.
Surface finish and temper rolling
Cold rolled sheet is usually supplied with a "bright" matte finish produced by light temper rolling after annealing. The roughness profile affects paint adhesion, lubricant retention, and the visual appearance of an exposed panel. A smoother finish looks better but can show finger marks and tool marks during forming; a slightly rougher "stretcher leveled" finish shows none of those marks but takes more paint to cover evenly.
Skin-pass temper rolling also sets the tendency of lightly formed regions to display Lüders bands during stamping. To suppress this, special processed sheet known as non-aging, or with a small titanium or niobium addition to pin the free nitrogen, is available for high-volume exposed panel work. Buyers who stamp large flat door skins or outer automotive panels should ask for this anti-stretcher-strain treatment when ordering.
Forming behaviour and lubrication
Cold rolled sheet behaves differently under bending, deep drawing, and stretch forming. For pure bending, the bend axis radius is the limiting factor: very tight bends on thick, high-strength grades can crack the outer fiber. SPCC and ST12 sheet bend readily at 1T radius in thicknesses up to about 1.5 mm, while ST14 and DC04 hold up at 0.5T or even tighter radii when the cut edge is properly prepared.
Deep drawing depends on a stable combination of yield strength, elongation, normal anisotropy (r value), and strain hardening exponent (n value). DC04, ST14, and SPCE offer the best of these properties. Stretch forming, on the other hand, benefits from a higher n value but does not require extreme r values, so SPCD or DC03 often performs well there.
For sliding parts and pin joints that require additional surface hardness or wear resistance, cold rolled sheet can be ordered with a thin galvanized coating. Galvanized cold rolled steel plate supplies the formability of cold rolled base metal with the corrosion protection and paintable surface of a zinc layer, and is widely used for HVAC housings, automotive underbody brackets, and electrical enclosure panels.
Selecting the right grade for the job
For general shop work that involves bending, light stamping, and welding, SPCC or ST12 is the safe and economical choice. For European specifications or parts where a mill test certificate is required for mechanical properties, DC01 gives the cleanest reference. For panels that must draw deeply or survive a multi-stage transfer press without splitting, step up to DC03, DC04, SPCD, ST13, or ST14 depending on the regional standard in use. For corrosion-prone outdoor panels, specify a galvanized version and confirm that the substrate beneath the coating is the appropriate drawing quality for the press load.
The cost difference between SPCC and the deepest drawing grades is modest compared with the cost of cracked parts and die re-work, which is why spec writers usually write down the deepest grade they can find on the shelf. The shop floor performance is what settles the question.
