Hot Rolled Steel Coil: Specifying Gauge, Coil Weight and Edge Condition Before Processing
Nobody buys a hot rolled coil to look at it. The coil is an input: it gets slit, cut to length, roll formed, pressed, or welded into something else, and the specification that matters is the one describing how it behaves inside that process. Two coils of the same grade can run very differently through the same line if the gauge tolerance, coil weight, or edge condition differ, and those are exactly the details most often left off a first enquiry. This note works through the decisions worth writing on the purchase order before the coil ships.
Start from the process, not the grade
The first question is not "which grade" but "what happens to the coil afterwards". A coil destined for a slitting line cares about width tolerance, camber and burr height. A coil going to a tube mill cares about edge condition and yield consistency. A coil that will be cut into blanks for presswork cares about flatness, mill scale and gauge variation across the width, because a crown that is invisible on paper shows up as springback differences between the left and right side of a press brake. Telling the supplier the end process allows them to pick the right rolling and finishing route, and it costs nothing to ask.
Gauge and width, and what tolerance really means
The hot rolled coil range in general industrial supply runs from roughly 0.3 mm to 200 mm in thickness, with the common structural and forming work sitting between 2 mm and 20 mm. Regular widths are 1000, 1250 and 1500 mm, and anything else is produced to order. Every gauge carries a tolerance band, and the band is what deserves attention. A nominal 3.0 mm coil delivered at 3.15 mm is still inside a standard commercial tolerance, but it will weigh more than the purchase order assumed and it will form differently. Where the downstream process is sensitive, specify a restricted tolerance or a half tolerance and expect the price to move accordingly. Width tolerance matters just as much for slitting: the difference between mill edge and trimmed edge is the difference between a known width and an approximate one.
Coil weight, inner diameter and handling
Standard hot rolled coils weigh between 3 and 18 tons, and the choice is a handling decision as much as a commercial one. Heavier coils mean fewer welds and changeovers per ton on a continuous line, which is why tube mills often ask for the top of the range. Lighter coils suit shops with smaller cranes, single-mandrel decoilers, or limited floor loading. The inside diameter should be confirmed against the decoiler mandrel, since 508 mm and 610 mm are both common and a mismatch stops the line on arrival day. Outside diameter matters too: an oversized coil that will not fit the coil car, or that exceeds the payload of the plant crane, creates cost long before it creates product. For reference, a typical finished unit in export supply weighs around 28 tons of bundled material with each roll carrying its own identification number.
Mill edge, trimmed edge and slit widths
As-rolled coil leaves the mill with a "mill edge", slightly irregular and not guaranteed to width. Trimmed coil has been sheared on both sides to a defined width and is the right call whenever the width enters a drawing or feeds a forming roll. When narrow strip is needed, the coil is slit into multiple strands, and the slit edge carries its own characteristics: a slight burr on one face and a work-hardened edge zone. Most downstream operations tolerate this; deep drawing and coating lines do not, and they should be told. Where the coil will be sheared into sheets, the steel plate shearing service takes care of both trimming and blanking to length, which transfers the edge-quality problem to a processor who deals with it daily.
Black, pickled or pickled and oiled
Hot rolled coil leaves the line covered in mill scale, the dark oxide layer that gives "black" steel its name. That surface is fine for structural parts, bases and anything destined for shot blasting, but it is hostile to tooling: scale flakes off during forming, embeds itself in dies, and ruins paint adhesion. Pickling removes the scale with acid, and a light oil film protects the now-active surface in transit and storage. Pickled and oiled coil is the standard input for painting lines, appliance panels and precision forming, and the modest premium is usually repaid in the first week of production. The surface treatment options available on request include pickling, oiled protection and blast preparation, so the condition can be matched to the next operation rather than chosen by default.
The grade families and where they fit
The commonly stocked families divide cleanly by duty. For general cold forming, SPHC hot rolled coil is the JIS baseline commercial quality, the safe default for rolled sections and light presswork. In the DIN world, ST37 coil covers similar general structural ground. On the Chinese standard side, Q195 coil and Q215 coil are low-carbon drawing and tube-making grades, while Q235 hot rolled coil is the everyday structural workhorse. Where a design follows American practice, A36 coil mirrors the familiar plate specification, and the same material is available cut as A36 hot rolled plate for fabrication shops that work in flat form. Higher strength comes from the 16Mn family, supplied as 16Mn hot rolled coil or, in current GB notation, Q345. Medium carbon 45# carbon steel coil sits apart: with roughly 0.45 percent carbon it machines and heat treats well but does not take deep cold forming, and it is more often bought as 45# steel plate for machined parts. SPHC is also stocked in flat form as SPHC plate, which suits buyers mixing coil-fed and sheet-fed work on one site.
Read the mill certificate like a processor
The material test certificate should list heat number, chemical composition, yield strength, tensile strength and elongation for the exact coil shipped, and the coil number stamped on the wrap should match the certificate. Processors should look one line further: at the yield spread across the coil, where available, because a coil whose yield drifts 40 MPa from head to tail will form inconsistently no matter what the average says. Traceability is not paperwork for its own sake. When a formed part cracks in service months later, the heat number is the only path back to the chemistry and rolling data that explain it.
A short checklist before ordering
Write down the process the coil feeds; fix gauge and width with the tolerance class, not just the nominal; state coil weight limits, inside diameter and maximum outside diameter; choose mill, trimmed or slit edge deliberately; decide black, pickled, or pickled and oiled against the next operation; and require a certificate tied to the shipped coil number.
