Stainless Steel Sheet Surface Finishes: 2B, BA, No.4, HL and No.8 Compared
Most architects, fabricators, and equipment designers do not pick a stainless steel sheet by grade alone. The grade sets the corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties; the surface finish sets how the part looks, how clean it stays, and how well it forms. Two identical 304 stainless steel sheets can look like two different materials if one comes in a 2B mill finish and the other in a No.8 mirror finish. Choosing the right finish at the order stage is far cheaper than trying to polish a part after the fact.
Why the surface finish matters
Stainless steel sheet leaves the mill with a finish that reflects every step downstream. The finish controls how light bounces off the surface, how fingerprints show up after handling, how well the part resists corrosion in a chloride-rich atmosphere, and how easily it can be roll-formed, deep-drawn, or welded without warping. A finish specification in the purchase order — written as "2B" or "No.4 / 180 grit" — gives the mill a clear target. A specification that only says "satin" or "polished" is asking for arguments when the goods arrive.
The standard reference for stainless finishes in most export markets is ASTM A480 / A480M, which lists the common mill and mechanically polished finishes. The European reference is EN 10088-2 with a parallel set of designations. The two systems agree closely enough that a finish quoted in one is recognized in the other without confusion.
Mill finishes: 2B and BA
The 2B finish is the default for cold rolled stainless sheet. It is a smooth, slightly reflective matte surface produced by final light cold rolling on polished rolls after annealing and pickling. The roughness is typically in the Ra 0.1 to 0.5 µm range, enough to scatter light without dulling the overall appearance. It is the everyday finish for stainless steel coil and sheet in 201 grade and the most common finish on 409 stainless sheet for automotive exhaust applications. Most fabricators select 2B when the sheet will be hidden, painted, or further polished before installation.
BA, or bright annealed, is the shiny counterpart to 2B. The strip is annealed in a hydrogen or nitrogen atmosphere so no oxide forms on the surface, and there is no final pickling. The result is a highly reflective, mirror-like but slightly hazy finish. BA is the standard choice for decorative trim, household appliances, and any panel where a smooth and clean appearance matters more than absolute mirror reflectivity. The downside is that BA is thinner than 2B in terms of formability margin — it can show stretcher strain on lightly formed panels unless an anti-stretcher-strain treatment is specified.
Mechanically polished finishes: No.4, HL, No.6, No.8
Polished finishes are produced by abrasive belts after the mill finish is in place. The numbering reflects the level of polish and was originally tied to grit size, although today the grading is more about appearance than the actual abrasive used.
No.4 is the workhorse of architectural and kitchen equipment stainless. It is a fine, directional polish with grit typically in the 150 to 240 range. The result is a satin finish with low reflectivity, good fingerprint hiding, and excellent cleanability when the polishing direction is consistent across panels. No.4 on 316L stainless coil is what most food processing and architectural panels ship with.
HL (hairline) is a finer and longer directional polish. The abrasive belt runs in one direction only, leaving a continuous fine line that looks elegant when matched across panels but stands out the moment one panel rotates the wrong way. It is the preferred finish for elevator interiors and high-end decorative panels where the reflection should look deliberate rather than random.
No.6 has a softer matte look than No.4 and is sometimes used in place of No.4 where fingerprint hiding is more important than surface uniformity. No.8 is the true mirror polish, usually achieved by passing the sheet through several stages of abrasive polishing with the final stage at 800 grit or finer and a buffing pass. It is used for cosmetic mirror panels, architectural accents, and decorative trim. Mirror polish on 202 stainless steel coil is one of the more affordable mirror options in the Asian supply chain, while mirror polish on 302 stainless has been used in stainless sheet 422 decorative panels.
PVD color, anti-fingerprint coating, and pattern finishes
Beyond the standard polished finishes, fabricators can order PVD-coated stainless in colors like champagne, rose gold, bronze, and black. PVD (physical vapor deposition) lays down a thin ceramic coating that changes the reflection color without affecting the underlying mechanical properties. These colored finishes are popular for elevator cabs, decorative door fronts, and signature architectural panels.
For high-touch surfaces, an anti-fingerprint (AFP) coating — sometimes called a fingerprint-resistant clear coat — can be applied over a No.4 or HL finish. AFP adds a thin lacquer that hides fingerprints and is easier to wipe clean. It is widely used on kitchen appliance fronts and decorative trim panels where the appearance must remain consistent in daily use.
Patterned finishes, including linen, bead blast, and embossed textures, are also available. They are typically specified for commercial kitchen walls, public-area elevator interiors, and decorative panels where bright reflections would be distracting. Patterned finishes also hide small scratches better than smooth ones, which extends the interval between cleanings in heavy-traffic environments.
Choosing the right finish for the application
For food processing and pharmaceutical equipment, a No.4 finish on 316L or 304 stainless is the standard. It is cleanable, corrosion-resistant, and easy to inspect for surface defects. For architectural panels, BA or No.4 finishes in 304 or 316 give the right balance of reflection and cleanability, with PVD or AFP added for premium projects. For 410S stainless sheet applications like appliance housings, the mill 2B finish is usually sufficient because the part is rarely the visual focus.
Where welded fabrication is needed, the order should include whether the weld zone will be hand-polished to match the surrounding sheet or left as-rolled. In tank fabrication the welds are usually ground and passivated but not always polished, while in architectural work the welds must match the surrounding finish. The mill should be told at quotation time, because the welding sequence and the polishing sequence affect cost in different ways.
At the end of the day the finish specification is a single line on the order — but it carries a lot of meaning.
